Movie costume design is a vibrant area with loads of creativity. In movies the costume not only means dress but it also includes footwear, accessories and make up. So it entails giving a complete look to the character.
In some cases creativity in costume designs is so much, as in the full body animal suits worn in the musical “Cats”. This design by John Napier made him the winner of 1983 “Tony Awards for Best Costume Design.
The movie costume designer first visualizes it, which itself takes lot of time and then it is tried on actual fabric. Here again the plot, setting, location of the story matters. Lot of research goes in designing of costumes. One need to have a thorough understanding of history, geography and culture of that arena where in the plot revolves. If it is an epic or period drama the authencity of costume needs to be maintained. Movie costume design is a work of art.
