What is a costume? Costume is a wide arena; to define it in exact words is difficult. Any and every design which is customized to meet a particular need is a costume. This need might differ from era to era, or, from plot to plot. In contemporary reference costume is meant to be dress in movies or theatres.
Important things to remember in costume design-
- Era – The period for which the costume is designed is important aspect. If the story revolves around 18th or 19th century the cuts of the dresses will have to be traditional. To make it authentic, history of that period needs to be brushed. In case of modern play we can play around with lots of colours and fabrics and funkiness.
- Period – the setting of the country is yet another point to deliberate. French or Russian period needs traditional dressing with corsets and lots of flows. Locational differences like whether the plot is in city or village have to be identified.
- Individual character- Lot depends on individual character depending upon plot.
These are the general points in costume designing. Based on this a framework needs to be designed.
